Both provinces sit on the European side of Turkey, between the Bulgarian and Greek borders and the Sea of Marmara, and both are within easy reach of Corlu-Tekirdag airport, where the tour starts and ends. You spend the first night in Edirne and the following two nights in the Tekirdag area, with an English-speaking guide on each touring day and comfortable air-conditioned transport throughout.
Edirne's skyline is shaped by three great mosques that trace the evolution of Ottoman design, and the guided city day visits all of them: the Eski Mosque, the Uc Serefeli Mosque with four minarets of differing patterns, and Sinan's Selimiye Mosque, a UNESCO World Heritage Site often called the summit of classical Ottoman architecture. You also pass historic hans and medreses, have time to shop in the Selimiye Arasta or the Ali Pasa covered bazaar, and visit the Health Museum in the Beyazit Complex. Lunch is a plate of Edirne's renowned fried liver.
The wine day begins early, with your guide sharing the history of winemaking in the region during the drive. At Chateau Kalpak you learn how the wines are made, walk through the vineyard and enjoy a first tasting. At Barbare there is time for a walk around the estate and a look inside the vault and storehouse lined with barrels, and the last stop, Chateau Nuzun, introduces you to organic wines before you taste them. Upon arrival at Corlu-Tekirdag airport you are met and transferred to your hotel in Edirne. After checking in, the rest of the day is free for you to relax or take an independent walk around the town centre, where the domes and minarets of the old capital rise above the rooftops. There are no organised visits or meals today. Overnight in Edirne.
After breakfast the guided tour of Edirne begins. You walk among historic inns and former religious schools and visit the Eski Mosque, the Uc Serefeli Mosque with its four distinctive minarets, and the Selimiye Mosque, Sinan's masterpiece. Free time allows you to browse the Selimiye Arasta or the Ali Pasa covered bazaar, and you also stop at the Health Museum in the Beyazit Complex. For lunch you taste Edirne-style fried liver. After the tour you travel south to Tekirdag. Overnight in Tekirdag.
An early start takes you from your hotel into the wine country, while your guide explains the long history of viticulture in Thrace. The first winery is Chateau Kalpak, where you tour the vineyard, learn about the winemaking process and enjoy a tasting. Next is Barbare, with a walk around the estate and a visit to its barrel-filled vault and storehouse. The day ends at Chateau Nuzun, known for its organic wines, which you sample after a short introduction. Lunch is included, and you are driven back to Tekirdag afterwards. Overnight in Tekirdag.
