Bitlis and the Shores of Lake Van in One Full Day

This compact private tour covers the essentials of Bitlis province in a single guided day, with two nights at a hotel in Bitlis, breakfast, and transfers from and to Van Airport, about two hours away.

Bitlis is built in a deep, narrow valley where two streams meet, its old houses made of the local reddish stone. The morning focuses on the town: the castle on its rocky spur, the early 13th-century İhlasiye Madrasa in Seljuk style and the 12th-century Grand Mosque, among the oldest in the region.

In the afternoon the route climbs to Nemrut Crater Lake, a deep-blue lake filling the caldera of an extinct volcano, and continues to Ahlat on Lake Van, considered one of the first major Turkish cities in Anatolia. Its museum and the huge Seljuk cemetery, with hundreds of finely carved tombstones, are the highlight of the day.

The landscape on the way is a highlight in its own right: snow-capped peaks around Nemrut and Süphan, poplar-lined valleys and the vast blue expanse of Lake Van, Turkey's largest lake. Bring a warm layer, as the crater rim is high and breezy even in summer.

The free arrival and departure days leave time to wander the old town and try local specialities such as büryan kebab and Bitlis honey. Lunches and dinners are not included; guiding, entrance fees and transfers are. The tour is easy to extend with Van, Akdamar Island or the Tatvan shore of the lake if you want to see more of the region.
