My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
Daily Bafa Lake Tour from Mugla – Herakleia & Mount Latmos Day Trip
Daily Bafa Lake Tour from Mugla
Escape the city on this relaxing daily excursion from Mugla to the serene shores of Bafa Lake, one of Turkey's most atmospheric natural treasures. This fully guided day tour combines unspoiled nature, remarkable birdlife and the haunting ruins of an ancient harbour city, all within an easy Mugla day trip that returns you to your hotel by early evening.
- Bafa Lake: A vast freshwater lake stretching roughly 15 kilometres long and 10 kilometres across, reaching depths of about 25 metres, with a section that still holds traces of salt from its seafaring past.
- Bird paradise: Home to 208 recorded bird species, including pelicans and storks, making it a dream for nature lovers and photographers.
- Herakleia (Latmos): The evocative ruins of an ancient town founded on a harbour at the foot of Mount Latmos.
- Mount Latmos: Rising 1,375 metres, wrapped in the legend of the moon goddess Selene and her beloved Endymion.
Until Roman times, Bafa Lake actually formed the innermost tip of the Lade Bay, open to the Aegean Sea. Over the centuries, the River Meander carried enormous amounts of silt downstream, and by around 400 AD the deposits had sealed the bay off completely, creating the lake we see today. Its waters now shelter sea bass, eels and carp, while the surrounding land supports cotton and olive farming alongside traditional beekeeping.
On the lake's rocky shore lies Herakleia, known in earlier times simply as Latmos. The city once thrived on agriculture, fishing and maritime trade, but when the Meander's silt cut its harbour off from the sea, its economy collapsed and the town slowly faded. The dramatic boulder-strewn slopes of Mount Latmos explain why so many myths were born here: legend tells that Selene, goddess of the moon, cast her beloved Endymion into an eternal sleep so she could visit him night after night. The mountain kept its sacred, mysterious aura well into the Byzantine era, when hermits and monasteries settled among its caves.

Mugla – Bafa Lake – Herakleia (Latmos) – Mugla
Your day begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel in Mugla, followed by a scenic drive in a fully air-conditioned, non-smoking vehicle toward Bafa Lake. Along the way, your professional English-speaking guide will explain how this beautiful lake was once the tip of the Lade Bay until the River Meander's silt deposits severed its link with the open sea around 400 AD. On arrival, take in the sweeping views of this enormous freshwater lake, which covers some 700 hectares and plunges to around 25 metres deep, with one part still retaining salt from its marine origins. Keep your camera ready: the lake is a true bird paradise hosting 208 species, among them pelicans and storks, while its waters teem with sea bass, eels and carp. You will then explore Herakleia, the ancient harbour town originally called Latmos, set on the skirts of the 1,375-metre Mount Latmos. Wander among the ruins as your guide recounts how the city lived off farming, fishing and sea commerce before the river's silt brought about its decline, and hear the famous legend of the moon goddess Selene, who placed her beloved Endymion into eternal sleep on this very mountain. The area's mystical character endured into Byzantine times, when monks sought solitude among its rocks. Around 17:00–18:00 you will depart Bafa Lake and drive back to Mugla, where you will be dropped off at your hotel, bringing your memorable daily excursion to a close.

What Our Travellers Say
Real, verified reviews from travellers who explored Turkey with us.
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.

Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
