From the Bosphorus to Cappadocia and Back via Bursa

This private eight-day road tour links Istanbul with the great sights of central and western Turkey and returns through Bursa, the city where the Ottoman story began. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included almost every day, along with a professional English-speaking guide, entrance fees and an air-conditioned vehicle with driver.

The journey opens with the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace before an overnight stop amid the forests of Bolu. In Ankara you visit Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Atatürk, and on the way to Cappadocia you stop at Tuz Gölü, a vast salt lake that can turn pink in early summer. A full day in Cappadocia covers Pigeon Valley, Devrent Valley, Uçhisar Castle, Avanos pottery and carpet workshops, Paşabağ and an underground city.

Crossing the plateau you stop at a 13th-century Seljuk caravanserai and in Konya at the Mevlana Museum, then reach Pamukkale. The white terraces and Hierapolis are followed by Ephesus with the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, the Temple of Hadrian and the Odeon, and a night in Kuşadası.

Heading north, you arrive in Bursa, UNESCO-listed as the birthplace of the Ottoman Empire, to see the Grand Mosque (Ulu Cami) with its twenty domes and the historic silk market, before returning to Istanbul for the Grand Bazaar. Shopping stops at carpet, pottery, leather, textile and local-produce outlets are part of the programme.
