Spread around the deep Gulf of Izmit at the eastern end of the Sea of Marmara, Kocaeli is a busy industrial province that also keeps a rich store of Ottoman buildings, naval memories and regional food traditions. This four-day, three-night itinerary pairs one guided sightseeing day with one culinary day, so you see the main monuments of the provincial centre and also learn what local families put on the table. Sightseeing begins at Kasr-i Humayun, the refined pavilion built for Sultan Abdulaziz and used as a base for his hunting trips. Close by rises the Izmit Clock Tower, part of a wave of towers commissioned across the empire for Sultan Abdulhamid II's twenty-fifth year on the throne. You will then board the Gayret Ship Museum, a decommissioned warship now open to visitors, explore the historic railway station that houses the Kocaeli Museum, and finish at the Coban Mustafa Pasa Mosque in Gebze, a graceful sixteenth-century Ottoman complex. Lunch is included on this day.
The following day you join the chef of a local restaurant for a hands-on cooking class. With your guide translating each step, you prepare dishes from Kocaeli cuisine together with salads and desserts, then enjoy the meal as your lunch. Free time in the city centre afterwards is ideal for hunting down pismaniye, the fine, floss-like sweet of pulled sugar and butter-roasted flour for which the area is famous. After breakfast your guide picks you up for a full city tour.
